A Local Family's Guide To Summer Fun In Sheffield

I checked in with my husband Dave and our four-year-old son Arthur for a family staycation on the Quayside, and it quickly became the perfect base for enjoying some of our favourite Sheffield attractions, discovering a few hidden gems, and making the most of the fantastic facilities within the hotel itself.

Whether you're visiting Sheffield for the first time or you're a local family looking for ideas to keep the little ones entertained this summer, here are some of our favourite family-friendly things to do in the city.

Hop On Sheffield’s Supertram

One of Arthur's absolute favourite things to do in Sheffield is ride the Supertram. Not only is it a brilliant way to get around the city, but for little ones, the journey itself is half the fun.

Arthur loves getting his "smiley face" ticket and watching the city whizz by through the windows. It's a great way to travel between attractions without tiring out little legs, and it always feels like a mini adventure.

Enjoy The Peace Gardens

The Peace Gardens are one of Sheffield's most iconic spots and somewhere we always enjoy visiting as a family.

The fountains are a huge hit during the warmer months, whilst Arthur loves chasing pigeons and counting the giant silver sculptures dotted around the space. It's a lovely place to sit for a while, enjoy the atmosphere and watch the city go by.

Escape Into The Winter Garden

The Winter Garden remains one of our favourite places in Sheffield, whatever the weather.

Filled with tropical plants and beautiful greenery, it's a peaceful oasis right in the heart of the city. Arthur particularly loves spotting the different "animals" amongst the displays, especially the panda hiding amongst the bamboo.

It's the perfect place for a wander and a moment of calm during a busy day of exploring.

Discover The Millennium Gallery

Located right next door, the Millennium Gallery is another fantastic family-friendly attraction.

The mix of permanent collections and changing exhibitions means there's always something new to discover, and it's one of those rare places that genuinely appeals to all ages. Whether you're interested in art, design, history or simply browsing, it's well worth a visit.

Burn Off Some Energy At Pounds Park

If you're visiting Sheffield with children, Pounds Park should definitely be on your list.

This brilliant city centre play area is packed with things to keep little ones entertained, from climbing equipment and slides to water play and a sandy area that's perfect for imaginative play. Arthur could happily spend hours here, and it's a fantastic spot for letting children burn off some energy.

Eat Your Way Around Cambridge Street Collective

One of Sheffield's most exciting recent additions is Cambridge Street Collective, Europe's largest food hall.

It's become one of our favourite places to visit because there's truly something for everyone. With independent vendors serving everything from Thai and Italian food to Ethiopian and Mexican cuisine, even the fussiest eaters will find something to enjoy.

On our latest visit, we tucked into loaded focaccia chicken alla vodka sandwiches from Sapore and salt and pepper chicken with egg fried rice from Send Noods. I also enjoyed a delicious blueberry mocktail whilst we soaked up the lively atmosphere.

Treat Yourself at Chocolate Bar

If you're a chocolate lover, this one's for you.

Chocolate Bar is an absolute gem and somewhere Arthur and I could quite happily spend an entire afternoon. The selection of chocolate-based treats is incredible, and everything is made using Fairtrade Bullion chocolate that's crafted with care.

We sampled the cornflake brownie, millionaire's shortbread and a dark chocolate chunk cookie, and honestly, choosing a favourite would be impossible.

Keep An Eye Out For Street Art

As you wander around Sheffield, don't forget to look up.

The city is packed with incredible murals, colourful street art and hidden graffiti pieces that add character to every corner. Arthur loves spotting the different artworks as we walk around, and it often turns a simple stroll into an unexpected adventure.

Visit The National Videogame Museum

The National Videogame Museum was an easy sell for our family, given that both of my boys love gaming.

It's packed with interactive exhibits, opportunities to play classic and modern games, and fascinating insights into the history of video games. Whilst Arthur loved trying out different games, I particularly enjoyed finding a retro dance machine that instantly transported me back to my teenage years.

It's a brilliant attraction that's just as much fun for grown-ups as it is for children.

Refuel At Tavern On The Quays

After a busy day exploring Sheffield, we headed back to Tavern on the Quays, the restaurant within Sandman Signature Sheffield Hotel, and it was exactly what we needed.

With beautiful views overlooking the Quayside, it provided the perfect setting to relax and enjoy a family meal.

I ordered the mango chicken with jasmine rice and vegetables alongside a large glass of Chenin Blanc, whilst Dave opted for the Tavern Smash Burger and a stein of Staropramen that was almost as impressive as the burger itself.

Arthur happily tucked into a margarita pizza before moving onto ice cream for dessert. Meanwhile, I couldn't resist the chocolate cookies and milk, and Dave rounded off the evening with caramel apple pie and custard.

The food was fantastic, but those cookies are the dish I'm still dreaming about.

Rest & Recharge

We stayed in a family room with a balcony overlooking the Quayside, which made for a lovely spot to relax after a busy day.

The beds were incredibly comfortable, and after all the walking, exploring and playing, all three of us were ready for a good night's sleep. The rainfall shower was very much appreciated the next morning, as was a coffee from the in-room Nespresso machine before starting another day of adventures.

Start the Day With Breakfast

Breakfast at Sandman Signature Sheffield Hotel was another highlight of our stay.

The selection was excellent, with everything from yoghurt, fruit and pastries to a wide range of cooked breakfast options. I opted for an omelette, whilst Dave and Arthur loaded up their plates with sausages, bacon and all the traditional breakfast favourites.

It was exactly the sort of breakfast that sets you up perfectly for a busy day exploring the city.

Make A Splash In The Pool

When asked what his favourite part of the stay was, Arthur didn't hesitate - the swimming pool.

Sandman Signature Sheffield Hotel's on-site pool was a huge hit, giving him plenty of opportunity to splash around and burn off some energy. Whilst the boys enjoyed the water, I even managed to sneak away for a little time in the sauna and steam room, which felt like a real treat.

Why We Love Summer In Sheffield

One of the best things about Sheffield is how much there is to do for families. From green spaces and cultural attractions to fantastic food, independent businesses and plenty of places for little ones to let off steam, there's always something new to discover.

Our stay at Sandman Signature Sheffield Hotel reminded us just how much fun it can be to press pause on everyday life and enjoy our own city through fresh eyes. With comfortable family rooms, fantastic leisure facilities, delicious food at Tavern on the Quays and a central location close to many of Sheffield's best attractions, it made for the perfect family staycation.

Whether you're visiting from further afield or you're a Sheffield local looking for inspiration this summer, we hope these ideas help you make some wonderful family memories.
