Green Key Certified

Glasgow Hotel becomes one of just 43 Scottish businesses to achieve a Green Key sustainable tourism certification.

At Sandman Signature Glasgow Hotel, we’re proud to announce that we’ve been awarded the esteemed Green Key certification, recognising our unwavering commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable hospitality.

Since opening our doors in 2023, sustainability has been a core focus of our operations. We've made significant investments to reduce our ecological footprint, most notably through the installation of a state-of-the-art wireless building management system that controls our major mechanical units. This upgrade has already delivered a 20% reduction in our monthly electricity usage.

Green Key is the leading international standard for environmental excellence in the tourism sector, and achieving this certification involved a rigorous evaluation across 13 criteria areas, aligned with UN Tourism guidelines. We’re honoured to meet these standards, and we're committed to ongoing improvement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to a greener future.

Our 179-bedroom hotel has taken a proactive approach to sustainability:

  • Smart energy control: Guest room temperatures are now managed through a front-desk controlled system that uses motion sensors to reduce energy use when rooms are unoccupied.

  • Water efficiency: Showers and taps feature water-saving devices to reduce unnecessary consumption.

  • Waste reduction: We’ve transitioned to refillable toiletries and switched to eco-friendly products where possible—significantly reducing single-use plastics.

  • Team engagement: Sustainability is embedded across departments, from housekeeping to management, with many team members now cycling to work.

Inga Gadisauskaite, General Manager at Sandman Signature Glasgow Hotel, is one of a team of five people responsible for overseeing environmental matters at the hotel, across various departments, from management and front desk to maintenance and housekeeping. Inga said: “We all know it’s important to play our part in helping to create a more environmentally friendly planet and this was something we took very seriously. Going through the Green Key certification process has been extremely helpful in encouraging us to make further improvements where possible. As an accreditation it is not easily achieved, which makes it so much more valuable. It’s been a real journey of learning, finding new ways to save water and electricity and ensuring that less waste goes to landfill. Our team have been right behind us, making their own adjustments such as many of them now cycling to work where possible.

“It’s proof of the esteem the Green Key certification is held in that it is one of the leading ecolabels recognised by the Google-powered booking engine Google Travel as part of its ‘Sustainability Labelling’. This verification is, rightly, important to guests.”

In Scotland the Green Key scheme is managed by Keep Scotland Beautiful, on behalf of the global Foundation for Environmental Education

We’re just getting started, and we look forward to sharing more as we continue our journey toward a more sustainable future.
